Dragons Den Studio
A TRUE STORY

Inside The Den

What it's really like pitching on Dragons' Den - from the hotel room to facing the Dragons

Hotel room
5:55 AM

Holiday Inn

I wake up in Manchester and rub my eyes, by the time I'm done my adrenaline is already kicking in. I notice a chicken costume lying crumpled on a chair.

In 5 hours time, I'll be wearing it on Dragons' Den.

BBC Studios

A taxi takes us to the studio and we're dropped off at a huge set of studio doors. We bump into another startup outside. We chat about how nervous we're feeling, shivering in the cold morning air as we try to help each other feel at ease.

The Masks

Inside, my handler asks me to run the pitch. I just about get through it without slipping up. Then I notice them on a table: two enormous cardboard faces of Deborah Meaden and Peter Jones, eye holes primitively enlarged with scissors. Dean and Ed will be wearing these in the Den.

The Rehearsal

We're brought to the studio for the first time to rehearse. It's enormous - hundreds of hanging lights, ropes and cameras. Then we see the lift: the gateway to the Den. It looks iconic. They tell me it's fake and doesn't go anywhere. I'm devastated. We then head back to our holding pen.

Change of plans

Earlier I'd sneaked a peek at the schedule and thought we weren't going to be on for at least another two hours. But then my handler pops his head in: "Get ready. you're on in ten." We head to the studio looking like three children's party entertainers.

Into the Den

The light goes green. We walk into the lift. 1, 2, 3. The doors open. The room is pitch black - except for five Dragons, each lit by a single spotlight. I run forward, dart left and then run behind the dragons.

Dean and Ed pause, then follow, revealing their horrifying masks.

The Benny Hill theme tune starts blasting out of some speakers. It's chaos.

I hide behind a plant.

The Pitch

I kick off, unsure if I actually remember what I'm going to say. I think I miss two sentences. I pause. I stutter in a tiny section but I then, against all odds, bring it home with my chicken wings fully spread out and say "global chicken domination" in a dramatic finale.

The Dragons smile.

Well, kind of.

Does a smirk count?

The Roasting

Then come the questions. One by one. It doesn't stop. Some are brutal. But some are... quite nice? It goes on for ages and I ramble a bit, you can watch it all back on iPlayer or read the long version of the story. I tried my best. Was it enough?

12:30 PM

To the Pub

I exit the den. The costume comes off. We head to the pub to debrief and celebrate. It's over. Relief. It was an epic experience and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity.

Dean and Ed, with me every step of the way.

Thanks guys.
